Are you bored of what you typically reach for at lunch? Or maybe you’re working on boosting your vegetable intake at dinner. If so, veggie burgers might just be the mealtime solution you’ve been searching for. But no need to sift through the options yourself because we’ve enlisted our registered dietitian’s help to point you in the right direction. We rounded up four veggie burgers for you to try with both store-bought and homemade varieties.
Before we get going with the list, there is one thing we should level up on. The veggie burgers we’re talking about aren’t meant to taste like the juicy beef burger you’re used to getting off the grill. Think of these more like a nutritious, convenient way to get in an extra serving of vegetables (or beans) in a patty form. They’re great used on a bun, in a wrap, on top of a bed of lettuce, or simply by themselves.
What to Look for When Selecting a Frozen Veggie Burger
Veggies! Sounds intuitive, right? But if you’ve been a reader of our blog for a while, you know we’re big on reading those labels. We recommend reading the ingredients to find a veggie burger that contains whole grains, beans, vegetables, or spices. Pro Tip: Ingredients are listed by their weight within the product, so the higher it is on the list, the more you’ll find in the product.
4 Veggie Burgers To Give A Try
Frozen
1. Hilary’s Organic Veggie Burger
You can’t miss its bright green box in the frozen section. It’s an organic product free of the top twelve allergens, which accommodates those with dietary restrictions. These patties are a great way to incorporate millet into your diet, a nutritious gluten-free whole grain you might not otherwise be eating. In addition, the burgers are made of kale, spinach, sweet potato, ground flaxseed, apple cider vinegar, spices, and oil.
Try It Out: We love this patty on top of a salad made of mixed greens, beets, bell pepper, goat cheese, and avocado.
2. Dr. Praeger’s Black Bean Quinoa Burger
Looking to up your fiber? This patty is a great place to start as it contains 7 grams of fiber, or 25% of your daily value, all thanks to the tricolor quinoa and black beans. It also includes vegetables like bell pepper, corn, onion, tomato, and jalapeno peppers to add a nice flavor to each bite. And don’t let the jalapeno peppers scare you away; we find it only has the slightest amount of heat, so be sure to try it even if you aren’t a spicy fan.
Try It Out: Our favorite way to enjoy is paired with pepper jack cheese and crisp romaine lettuce rolled into a whole wheat wrap.
Homemade
3. Minimalistic Baker’s Sweet Potato Black Bean Burger
While this veggie burger requires about 90 minutes to complete, the hundreds of five-star ratings should be a good indication that it will be well worth your culinary efforts. This patty is low in sodium, at only 120 mg per serving. In addition, it’s packed with nutritious ingredients like sweet potato (yes, Vitamin A), olive oil, brown rice, black beans, green onion, walnuts, and spices. Once you form the patties, you’ll bake them in the oven, flipping halfway through. This recipe freezes well, so you don’t have to worry about your efforts going to waste.
Try It Out: The recipe developer displays the veggie burger on a bun with leafy lettuce, creamy avocado, and crisp red onion.
4. Wonderful Walnut Burger
This is one of our very own recipes and does require a food processor or high-speed blender to complete. It’s made by combining chickpeas and walnuts with breadcrumbs and spices. Our secret ingredient? Peanut butter! It takes the place of an egg to help bind the mixture together while adding a touch of sweetness. This recipe makes four servings, so it’s extra convenient for meal prep and cooks nicely (and quickly) in a skillet.
Try It Out: Put it on a whole wheat bun with the classic hamburger toppings of lettuce, tomato, onion, ketchup, and mustard.
The Bottom Line
Boost your daily serving of vegetables with the help of a veggie burger. Whether store-bought or homemade, these flavorful patties can make a delicious and nutritious meal.
