After diet and exercise, water is usually the next focus area when it comes to health and wellness. For some, drinking water comes easily while for others, it can be a struggle. If it’s harder to get in your ounces each day, we understand and wanted to help. So we polled our community to see what tips they could offer to support you with this goal. While we received many entries, there were five common themes that came across on how to be successful with drinking more water:
1. The Cup is Key
This was the top entry by far. Most had a designated cup that they filled each day to accomplish their water goals. We totally support a new water bottle purchase – you deserve it.
Here are a couple of things to consider when selecting yours:
- Insulated or Clear? Insulated is great if you prefer ice-cold water as most cups will keep the temperature regulated easily. Clear works better for those who need to see their progress throughout the day.
- Large or Small? Think through how many times you want to refill each day. Many recommended a 32-ounce water bottle that they aimed to refill at least once each day, but you can go bigger or smaller depending on what works for you.
2. Find a Favorite Straw
Some members felt a straw was a total game-changer for drinking more water. Do you drink faster with a straw? If so, there are plenty of reusable straw options out there made of stainless steel, silicon, glass, or plastic. You can also try looking for a new cup with one included.
3. Make it Cute
Your cup that is. Our Lose It! community voted a strong yes on this one. Try adding motivational quotes to your cup for an extra boost of positivity. Make your own tick marks on the cup to challenge yourself to drink a certain amount before lunch, dinner, etc. Find a cup with a seasonal pattern, your favorite sports team, or support a local business.
4. Don’t Be Afraid of Flavor
Most stated that drinking plain water every day wasn’t sustainable so they found healthy alternatives to add flavor to their beverage. An important takeaway here is to read the ingredients. I know we are a little bit of a broken record here about reading ingredients, but it’s because we want you to know what you’re buying and putting in your body.
Here are some of the items members put in their water or alternatives to water:
- Liquid water enhancers like Mio
- Electrolytes like Liquid IV
- Sports Drinks like Vitamin Water, Gatorade or Powerade
- Superfood powders
- Sparkling water like La Croix
5. Be Intentional
