Can you expand on your reasoning, or what guidelines should be followed?

Hi Meg!
The challenge with studying pregnant women is it is unethical to design randomized-controlled trials where one women gets tea and one doesn’t and you monitor any negative outcomes to the fetus. As such, most teas that have been found to be unsafe are from observational studies.

In general, any tea that is not on the list would be considered safe in pregnancy. If you have any questions about the safety of different products in pregnancy, give “Mother Risk” a call. They are a free service run out of Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto and will provide an evidence-based answer to your questions about the safety of tea in pregnancy. http://www.motherisk.org/

Kind regards,

Susan

What I have found interesting though, is that I have not seen many dietitians or healthy pregnancy books list any information on certain teas being possibly harmful to unborn babies. I can understand why things like Valerian may be considered unsafe, being a sedative. But even for a non- pregnant healthy person, the use of valerian is reccomended to be short term and moderate. Would you mind elaborating on the risks posed with the example teas in the list? Are they all or at least some of them safe in moderation?
