Comment on Does What We Eat Change our Metabolism? by John Vance https://cronometer.com/blog/does-what-we-eat-change-our-metabolism/#comment-19514 Fri, 01 Mar 2019 21:02:21 +0000 https://tiller.cronometerdev.com/blog/?p=38051#comment-19514 Please don’t overstate the effect strength training has on basal metabolic rate. The research clearly says that each additional lb of muscle increases BMR by 5 to 7 Calories a day. A woman doing compound lifts hard and heavy for maximum hypertrophy can expect to gain maybe 10 lbs of muscle after a year of solid dedication. That’s maybe 60 additional calories per day added on to her BMR. Not insignificant, but not a real game changer.

As far as weight loss is concerned, yes, smaller bodies burn fewer calories. The loss of lean mass is often overstated, as much of the loss is from interstitial fluid, and muscle mass loss can be minimized by strength training while losing weight.

I realize it’s just an estimate, but curious what people think. Don’t want to adjust my calories based on it and be blowing my budget for my target weight loss!

This mechanism triggered during fasting. The Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2016 was awarded to Yoshinori Ohsumi for the discovery of the detail processes involved. Cells use autophagy to eliminate damaged proteins and organelles, a quality control mechanism that is critical for counteracting the negative consequences of ageing. Disrupted autophagy has been linked to Parkinson’s disease, type 2 diabetes and other disorders that appear in the elderly. Disturbances in the autophagic machinery have also been linked to cancer.
