Non-dairy milk comes at a high price point with loads of sugar and additives. The alternative is to make it at home, but it seems daunting because of the overnight soaking and expensive ingredients. What if it didn’t! Welcome to the wonderful world of Oat Milk! You can make your own Oat Milk at home in just a few minutes, with no overnight soak, and with no waste!
Vanilla Oat Milk
Ingredients
- 1 cup Old Fashioned Oats
- 4 cups cold water
- 1-3 pitted dates
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Optional pinch of salt
Instructions
Add oats to a bowl and fill with enough cold water to cover the oats. Let soak for 10 minutes. Drain the water and rinse the soaked oats. Pour oats and the rest of the ingredients into a blender. Blend for 1 minute. Strain through a fine mesh strainer, as seen in the video, and enjoy! Store in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
Chocolate Oat Milk
Ingredients
- 1 cup Old Fashioned Oats
- 4 cups cold water
- 1 Tbl maple syrup or agave
- 2 Tbl cocoa powder
- Pinch of salt
Follow the same instructions for the vanilla Oat Milk.
Pro Tips:
- If you want to remove all pulp from your oat milk, strain through a cheese cloth after you have used a fine mesh strainer.
- Making unflavored Oat Milk by skipping the dates and vanilla is a great alternative if you are making a cream sauce like an alfredo. Due to the thickening properties of oats you don’t need to add flour or make a roux for a creamy bechemel. Most store bought non-dairy milk adds sweeteners and flavors even if it’s listed as “unsweetened.”
- Keep the pulp from the oats for breakfast or as an addition to breads or muffins. Can be refrigerated or frozen for future use.
