Looking for adventure? Get the motor running; let’s go to the gas station. From cross-country road trips to weekend getaways, you’ll find more than just fuel for your car at a gas station—you’ll also find fuel for your body. Today we’ve rounded up a few of our favorite dietitian-approved gas station snacks to help you make the most of your next roadside pit stop.

1. Beef Jerky, Anyone?

Beef jerky is a compact, high-protein, low-calorie snack. It’s also a viable option if you’re not interested in making a mess in your car. Whether you’re feeling peckish or need something to tide you over till the next meal, give 100% beef jerky a try.

2. Pass the Peanuts

Peanuts contain three essential nutrients: fat, protein, and carbohydrates. These nutrients give the body energy and are needed to sustain life. The peanuts found at gas stations come in a variety of flavors. Honey-roasted and the hot and spicy flavors may be crowd-pleasers, but plain roasted peanuts are sure to keep your hands (and steering wheel) clean.

3. A Perfect Pair, Pretzels and Hummus

Desiring something salty and crunchy? Pretzels are a satisfying choice, especially if you want to avoid the grease found in chips. Eating pretzels paired with hummus increases the nutrition profile. This is because hummus contains vitamins, minerals, and plant-based protein

4. Twizzlers are a Thing

Like snacks closer to 100 calories? Twizzlers can be a convenient, kid-friendly snack that contains only 110 calories per serving. Twizzlers can satisfy your sweet tooth and live up to the hype of being a fun, chewy on-the-go treat.

5. Bananas for the Win

Bananas are a heart-healthy food and a good source of potassium. The body uses potassium for blood-pressure regulation, muscle contraction, and kidney function. Eating bananas as they are or coupling them with peanut butter can tide you over until your next pit stop.

6. Sunflower Seeds, Please

Sunflower seeds contain vitamin E, a fat-soluble vitamin that protects the body from antioxidant damage. Adequate vitamin E intake also protects the skin from sun damage. So if the windows on your car aren’t tinted, consider munching on sunflower seeds as you take in those sunny rays.

The Bottom Line

Whether you’re headed down the highway or up the byway, gas stations provide nutritious and delicious foods for you to fuel up. Take your pick of sweet or savory—we trust these “pit stop finds” will leave you satisfied and ready for an adventure.
