Have you ever skipped a workout and then somehow, before you know it, you haven’t worked out in several weeks? If this sounds like you, you may want to consider enlisting the support of a Workout Buddy. This is simply someone who can keep you consistent with your exercise intentions. Ask neighbors, coworkers, friends, family, or classmates. Multiple people interested? Great, you can certainly have more than one! Not convinced? Here are four benefits of having a workout buddy:
1. Motivation
Sometimes the hardest part isn’t finding the time to exercise but actually following through with the commitment. Having a person counting on you to show up makes it more like a meeting which can help you build it into your schedule. A study out of Kansas State University found that people exercised up to 200 percent harder and longer when with a partner. Help showing up and working out harder? Sign me up!
2. Social
Many of us this past year have adapted to working from home and connecting virtually. An in-person workout buddy can be the real-life social interaction we have longed for this year. Whether a close friend or a new neighbor, chances are you’ll bond quickly during your sweat sessions due to your like-minded health goals.
3. Mood
It’s no surprise that exercise boasts many health benefits, including improved mood and reduced stress- we can thank endorphins for that! A study at the University of Southern California found that people who exercised with a friend or spouse were happier than those who exercised alone. And chances are, if you are happier during your workout, you are more likely to come back to it.
4. Safety
Strength in numbers is true in many cases, and exercise is no exception. Having someone with you (especially early morning or at night) can be helpful in case something unexpected happensgoes wrong. In the gym, having a friend to spot can make sure you’re lifting the proper weight while maintaining proper form.
Exercise is a great health promoting behavior, and finding that perfect workout buddy (or buddies!) can make sure that this is one healthy habit you can stick to long term.
